All Kasi Clothing Company in collaboration with Footballers Union of Botswana (FUB) has honoured former player Tumie Duiker by designing a customised trainer’s football shoe engraved, Duiker 15.
The trainer is expected to hit the market in June and will cost P800. Speaking at the launch, Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, who pledged to buy the first pair, said hounoring Duiker was not just to recognise him, but also to start a journey of recognising legends of the game.
“It is also a call to us as the government to have a clear athletes policy, that supports our athletes, from playing days to post playing days,” he said.
Kelebeng said considering Duiker’s journey as a football player, there was no doubt that he was a legend that needed to be recognised. Also, he said All Kasi should be celebrated, hence he came to endorse their partnership with Duiker.
All Kasi clothing label marketing director, Barnes Maplanka said having played football with Duiker, they found it fit to honour the legend of their times. He said Duiker’s work spoke for itself hence they wanted to ‘give him his flowers’ while he was still alive.
“When we grew up, Duiker was a celebrity, and it was very difficult for people to see him, except during match day, and a lot of us idolised him,” he said.
Former Extension Gunners’ manager, Rashid Chopdat said Duiker was a humble and a good player during his time.
“When we took him from TAFIC, It was not easy. It was difficult to get his blue book, and we engaged a lawyer, Sidney Pilane,” he said.
He said they went to the Appeals Board for his clearance and Pilane was adamant that they were not going to give TAFIC more than P500. After an intence argument at the Appeals Board, Chopdat said he then called TAFIC financier, Geoffrey Maygillip, and they resolved the issue and he gave him P2 000 and managed to get Duiker’s signature. Duiker thanked All Kasi and FUB for honouring and celebrating his contribution to football in Botswana. ENDS
