Over 100 horses are expected to compete at the upcoming Easter holidays horse race billed for Maun on Saturday.

The annual horse race organised by Masa farm owner, Othata Masedi in collaboration with Sunbet Botswana and Mascom has attracted horses from Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and South Africa to compete in different races ranging from 100m to 2 400m categories

He said preparations were progressing well adding that some horses had started arriving and establishing stables at the racing farm. He called on some horse owners who still had interest in the race to register as registration closes on the day of the event. In addition, he promised a high-class racing event, saying they had secured two sponsors and that there were some developments at the farm in terms of clearing the track and putting up some stands.

“Last year, we failed to secure the main sponsor and this year we are happy that some companies came on board to partner with us. We are very much happy that Mascom is back and we promise to present the best event,” he added.

Going forward, he wished for the event to become one of the largest races in Southern Africa saying it had the potential to contribute meaningfully to the tourism sector and the local economy. Masedi said the event would be fun-filled with musical entertainment and appealed to members of the community to come in large numbers to support the event. Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng is expected to officiate at the event and Botswana Horsing Association members as well as Maun leadership are expected to grace the occasion.

One of the horse owners, Mekgwe Moalosi from Shashe ward in Maun, said he was ready to compete indicating that he had brought two horses, a crossbreed and thoroughbred, namely, Jealous Down, which would participate in 1 000m and 1 600m while Felix of Danganda would race in 800m and 1 000m respectively. Although, he anticipates a fiercely contested race, he promised to present a spirited fight amongst his competitors as he had long prepared for the event.

Moalosi is one of the champions of professional horse racing as he has participated in the race since 2006. Last year, he said, his horses did not impress as expected as one scooped position three but assured his supporters to dominate the race this time around. ENDS
