Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng had assured the nation that the FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix will continue as planned at the National Stadium on Saturday. Minister Kelebeng said in an interview that all stakeholders were working round the clock to ensure that the track was completed by Friday, adding that the meet was of national importance. Kelebeng said the stadium could have long been handed to the Grand Prix organisers.
However, he said that never happened, as there were come challenges including the interruption of construction by heavy rains in the past days.
He said most of the works had been done and contractors were in the process of laying the blue granules, but would have to wait until the surface was dry.
“I just want to tell Batswana that we are going through testing times, and that is when the leadership must rise to the occasion,” he said. He said athletics code had been doing well hence government would do everything to support it.
“We will also continue to support other sporting codes, but priority this time, is to host a very successful Golden Grand Prix event,” he said. Moving forward, Kelebeng said they would want to have facilities that were of international standard.
He further said it was critical that there was a hosting strategy in place, which would address issues of facilities and preparations, among other things. ends
