08 Apr 2025
Number 8 District traffic officer, Superintendent Bakani Taleyana has warned taxi operators to be vigilant of customers with sinister intentions.
Addressing taxi operators at Letlhakane bus rank today, Supt.Taleyana adviced taxi drivers to consider accompanying each other on daily trips, especially during awkward hours. The meeting was prompted by numerous reports of taxi drivers being attacked or hijacked by criminals masquerading as genuine customers.
In a recent incident which occurred around 3am on Saturday, two men pretending to be customers heading to Phase 1, were reported to have boarded a taxi at the bus rank and attacked the driver by tying him with a rope when they reached the destination. They also took away his taxi and cash amounting to P300. The police chief said investigations were ongoing with no arrests made so far, pointing that the taxi had also not been recovered.
Letlhakane Taxi Association chairman, Mr Ontshekile Neelo expressed concern about piracy in Letlhakane, pointing that it negatively impacted business of authentic operators. He therefore pleaded with relevant authorities to intensify measures against those operating without permits especially at night. ENDS
