A Motswana man and four Zimbabwean nationals will appear before the court for harbouring illegal immigrants and for staying in the country without the necessary documentation.
Superintendent Boipuso Baatweng of the Tati-Town Police informed BOPA on Tuesday that the police became aware of the situation after the vehicle carrying the five individuals was involved in an accident on the Francistown-Orapa road.
The five were reportedly en-route to Rakops when the driver, a Motswana man, lost control of the Honda Fit, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The accident resulted in injuries to both the driver and one of the passengers.
Upon investigation, the police confirmed that the four Zimbabweans did not possess valid passports. Superintendent Baatweng stated, “We will charge the driver with illegally harbouring foreigners lacking proper documentation, and the four Zimbabweans will not escape charges for staying in Botswana without passports, as required by law.”
He added that the five men will face the law once the injured parties have been discharged from the hospital.
Superintendent Baatweng warned Batswana against harbouring illegal immigrants, stating that this could lead to severe legal consequences. ENDS
