Trust revives culture tradition

25 Mar 2025

In an effort to preserve and protect the rich cultural heritage of Phuduhudu, the Xhauxhwatubi Development Trust held a two day-cultural festival recently.

Phuduhudu recently came alive with a vibrant cultural festival that offered a wide array of activities aimed at celebrating and preserving the rich heritage of the region. The festivities included a cultural dinner, a traditional fire lighting ceremony, eco-friendly initiatives, game drives, and performances by various cultural artists.

Letlhogonolo Kamuti, the trust manager, described the event as a resounding success and expressed the committee’s intention to hold the festival annually. “We realised the need to revive, preserve, and protect the rich cultural heritage of the village,” he stated during an interview.

Phuduhudu is renowned for its historical and cultural narratives, with roots tracing back to the early days of human settlement in the Makgadikgadi Pans.

“The village and its surrounding areas are dotted with historical trail sites that mark the journeys, struggles, and triumphs of the people who have lived here for decades,” Kamuti added.

He emphasised that these sites are not only significant to the community but also hold immense value for historians, archaeologists, and tourists.

Despite their importance, Kamuti pointed out that these historical trail sites have remained largely undocumented and unprotected, leading to their gradual degradation due to natural elements and human activities.

“Through the cultural festival, we intend to collaborate with historians and cultural experts to document and research local historical sites to ensure that stories and practices are preserved for future generations,” he said.

Kamuti also noted that the village has limited economic opportunities and believes that the untapped potential of these historical sites could be harnessed to promote tourism, which could, in turn, create jobs and stimulate the local economy.

“In a rapidly changing world, there is a need to preserve cultural identity and engage the younger generation in our rich traditions,” he remarked.

The festival served as a platform for storytelling while showcasing traditional music, dance, and culinary delights that reflect the diverse heritage of the village.

“By bringing attention to these sites, we aim to promote heritage conservation and encourage community involvement in safeguarding our history,” Kamuti explained.

The festival also incorporated green initiatives, including a cycling event encouraging eco-friendly practices and a game drive to appreciate local wildlife.. ENDS
