Wayeyi celebrate culture

The annual Wayeyi Cultural Festival aimed to revive the Wayeyi culture, language and practices is set to take place in Gumare this weekend.
The festivities kick off with a beauty pageant this evening, followed by the main event tomorrow, and will end with a cultural night on Saturday evening.
In an interview, Kamanakao Association public relations officer Mabe Bamba highlighted that the cultural event was aimed to revive the diminishing Wayeyi culture, language and practices. Bamba said different Wayeyi traditional groups from Gumare, Ikoga and Jao such as Shigyakao and Tiwazane would entertain with Seperu during the festival.
To add variety and embrace other cultures organisers have invited a Hambukushu group called Mayaperwa of Diware dance from Etsha 6 and Batana sa Magosi group of Gumare Tsutsube dance. Bamba said the festival nurtured culture among children and youth since the participating groups were mainly children and youth.
A variety of Wayeyi traditional food such as tswii would be served to showcase culture, he said. Bamba said Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs Ms Lesego Chombo and some Dikgosi in the Okavango District would grace the event.
He said as a norm they were expecting some representatives from Wayeyi in Namibia. He further said they were expecting some Wayeyi contemporary artists to perform during the festival. ENDS
