Jwaneng wins netball tournament

Jwaneng Netball Club emerged the champions of the first Jwaneng Netball Extravaganza Tournament held over the weekend.

The 2023/24 Lucara Botswana Netball League champions and the Botswana Netball Association (BONA) Spring 2024 Netball Tournament title holders, defeated Police 37-20 in a final match held on Sunday.

The diamond girls went further to make a sweep on all individual awards in the ladies category, through Barati Phesodi, Natasha Maribe, Boikanyo Selogetso and Gloria Adeooni who were named Overall Player, Best Mid Court Player, Best Shooter and Best Defender of the tournament respectively. 

In the men’s category, Police escaped by a whisker when they managed a one-goal margin against BDF Cats, ending the score at 37-36. 

The champions were awarded P10 000, while second and third positions got P7 500 and P5 000 in each category. 

The Overall Player walked away with P1 500, while other individual awards got P1 000 each. 

Bonnie Moeng of Police scooped both Overall Player and Best Shooter, while his teammate, Mompati Motlhanka and BDF Cats’ John Lucas were named Best Mid Court and Best Defender respectively in the male category. 

Meanwhile, speaking at a closing ceremony, Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng applauded participating teams for their dedication and contribution towards the government’s vision of promoting sport development. 

“Events such as the Jwaneng Netball Extravaganza therefore support the government’s vision by nurturing dedication and teamwork among our youth, helping shape the future of our nation. Through this event, we are able to witness excellence in action, discipline and unity, which are principles that demonstrate that this tournament is aligned to the government’s mandate,” he noted. 

He reiterated government’s commitment towards investing in sport and related infrastructure in an endeavour to create more opportunities for young people. 

He also lauded the tournament’s main sponsor, Debswana, for its continued unwavering support for various sporting activities across the country. He subsequently called on others in the private sector to play a part in partnering with government in nurturing talent and supporting young athletes.

“With collective effort and commitment, I believe together we can create an environment where sports thrive and contribute to the growth and development of our nation,” he said. ENDS
