Galaxy hammer Gunners

24 Mar 2025

Jwaneng Galaxy women football side hammered Extension Gunners women 5-0 in a Southern Region Football Association (SOFRA) Month of Youth Against AIDS (MYAA) Women Football Fiesta at Lobatse ground on Saturday.

Played in front of a youthful crowd, Galaxy women dominated ball possession with their display of football, which was a joy to behold while Gunners women fought hard to avoid their structure crumbling under a series of relentless attacks, which yielded five goals.

“In the first 10 minutes of the game, we demonstrated our prowess, we dictated the tempo of the game and ultimately found our first goal of the game. We thought it would dismantle Gunners but they kept their structure until second half, my players did well in terms of converting their chances,” said former women football national team coach and Jwaneng Galaxy current coach, Gaolethoo Nkutlwisang after delivering yet another convincing win.

She said the team was able to achieve the results of having an upper hand on the pitch as they trained very well.

“We have good quality and disciplined players. Most of the time in our training sessions, we deal with attacks because our players are forward players. We are prepared for the upcoming games. We will do much better to prepare for the next game,” she said.

For his part, Extension Gunners women head coach, Botlhe Mokgotetsi admitted that he was not happy with the results.

“We had about two weeks without training properly as all our players who reside outside Lobatse could not train with us. Our first choice goal keeper had work commitments and about four of our players had work and family commitments,” he said.

He said the players did not play according to plan and they had intended to pack the midfield and then press forward.

“We had planned to move to the defence whenever they came for us but unfortunately we were porous at the back. Nonetheless, we had composure, our goal keeper is new and this is her second game and so we lost,” he said.

Coach Mokgotetsi further said the women football needed support from community and stakeholders in order to move forward.

The fiesta league featured 10 teams who all played at Lobatse on Saturday at different sporting fields, where Kanye Swallows and Bonto FC played to a one-all draw while Maletamotse beat 11 Queens 3-0, Zodiac Collabo girls defeated Moshupa New Stars 2-1, while Tholo Peace Masters drew 2-2 against Roman Warriors.

In an interview, SORFA executive committee member Omphemetse Mmolai said the games constituted Week 12 of the Southern women league scheduled to complete on May 3

“We do not have log standings now because there were cases of games, which lagged behind, some were not played because they were called off, some teams did not honour fixtures so the disciplinary hearings were held on Friday. On Monday, we will have the verdict,” she said.

She said the fiesta games were in line with the MYAA concept paper.

“Instead of having a tournament, we decided to fixture Week 12, as a special assembly where we bring all women teams together. Here different stakeholders come together, there are health screenings and testing done and we also get the opportunity to hear from the community how we can move women football forward,” she noted.

Mmolai said because women football strategy was to change perceptions, they were taking women football to the people to ensure that they shared its value.

“It’s a positive platform to convey messages on gender-based violence and to promote sisterhood,” she said.

She said SORFA was committed to the betterment of adolescent girls and young women not only in football, but also their well being through partnerships in youth initiatives, adding that the fiesta was one of the activities held to commemorate MYAA.
