Fifi Afrika returns from music hiatus

After a two-year hiatus from the music scene the iconic Kefilwe Radovic, commonly known as Fifi Afrika, is making her return with an upcoming album titled Gemini set for release in June.

Fifi, renowned for her 2019 hit and rendition of 'Re Babedi' by Annafiki Ditau, as well as original songs like 'Heaven Weeps', is known for her unmistakable, love-infused sound. Her new album promises to embody this signature style. Taking a break from her soulful humming, song writing, and angelic singing, she sat down with BOPA to share insights into her project.

“In this album, I sing about love, family and myself,” Fifi revealed during a studio session at Andy Batshogile’s South Ring studio.

However, she emphasised that the album won’t be all sweetness and light.

“It will also explore the darker side of love. Sometimes love can break you, but my message to listeners is clear, even when you feel broken, you can still find self-love and rise again,” she said.

During her two year break from music, the singer-songwriter focused on another passion, designing sustainable leather and wood handbags. She shared that she crafted he wooden handbags from discarded pallet pieces, which she transformed into beautiful, functional accessories.

“When people ask what I do, I tell them I’m an artist. For me, that word encompasses everything I create. Over the past two years, I’ve been setting up my business, working with my hands,” Fifi said.

She also revealed that she used the break to establish a tailoring business under her brand TTTT, an acronym inspired by her daughters’ names, Tamara Thato and Tiana Tetlaanyo, as well as the tagline, 'Together to the Top'.

Fifi hopes to capture the essence of 'yin and yang' in her album, a concept rooted in Chinese philosophy that describes the interconnected balance of opposites.

“I want my album to blend both Setswana and English, reflecting who I am. Strange, bubbly and silly,” she said.

However, she admitted that writing in Setswana was a challenge.

“My Setswana vocabulary is quite limited, but that won’t stop me. Besides, my husband loves it when I sing in Setswana," she said.

So far, the multi-talented singer has completed seven tracks and has five more to go, rounding out a 12-track R&B album. She hopes to release it in June, ideally on her birthday.

“Muni Long sings my kind of R&B. I love her style, but I want to create my own sound, infused with an African touch,” Fifi shared. ENDS
