 The 2024 edition of the 6Series Taekwondo Championship was not only to promote Taekwondo but to also cultivate world-class athletes in the country.

This was said by Botswana Taekwondo Federation (BTF) public relations officer, Boleng Sedimo on the sidelines of the championship which was held in Gaborone over the weekend.

“We have five affiliated clubs, all based in Gaborone, being New Era, Powerhouse, Mighty Lions, UB and Regent Hill Taekwondo clubs,” he said.

He said the championship was a success with promising attendance, particularly in the cadet category which dominated the event with the majority of athletes. That, he said, reflected the bright future for Taekwondo in Botswana. Even though, the event went well, he said they faced numerous challenges including inadequate athlete equipment, funding issues and inconsistent attendance due to injury.

“To address these challenges, we invite sponsors to support our upcoming 6Series tournament, which will commence in June until December. Sponsorship will be crucial in overcoming our current obstacles and ensuring the continued growth and success of Taekwondo in Botswana,” Sedimo said.

BTF president, Tumelo Mapila thanked athletes, offficials and the BTF executive for their unwavering dedication and participation in the sport. Mapila said the officials’ professionalism and commitment were crucial in ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the tournament. He expressed appreciation for their efforts in maintaining the highest standards of fairness and sportsmanship.

Mapila said the BTF executive facilitated the championship and fostered growth and success of the sport through their visionary leadership, dedication and restless efforts.

“You have provided the platform for our athletes to showcase their skills and for our community to come together in celebration of this beautiful martial art,” he said.

Mapila said the championship was also made possible by the support of sponsors, which was invaluable in ensuring the well being and performance of athletes. ENDS
