Seloba celebrates decade of fashion mastery

16 Mar 2025

Masa Gardens in Rasesa came alive on Saturday when Thapelo Mokgethi of Seloba Creations Fashion Designers celebrated a decade in the fashion industry.
The cool weather added to the serenity of the venue together with the perfectly selected music. All these created a soothing ambiance for a spring collection fashion show.
It started off with young models confidently strutting down the red carpet in black outfits. As the event progressed, the models transitioned into vibrant spring colours, presenting elegant gowns suitable for a variety of evening events.
“The intention was to bring out a collection that celebrates spring,” she explained. Thapelo’s line featured colourful sets, simple yet elegant, modern designs that catered to both casual and formal occasions, allowing fashion lovers of different tastes to find something they love in her collection.
Inspired by a family sewing machine from her childhood, Thapelo once made small clothes for dolls. “That’s where my passion for fashion began,” she said.
Through hard work and dedication, she has gained international exposure by dressing well-known figures like the current Miss World Africa Lesego Chombo, former Miss Botswana Palesa Molefe and reigning Mrs Botswana Portia Makgatong.
“I have also had the opportunity to showcase my work in countries like Togo and Djibouti,” she said.
In 2021, she won the Best Fashion Personality award at the Botswana National Youth Council awards. In 2023, Thapelo made her maiden entry at the Glitz Awards and won, creating a lasting relationship with the Glitz team.
During the fashion show, Nkgopolang Tlhomelang from the Glitz Awards attended to show support. He said, “We intend to support Thapelo during upcoming events and feature different talents on the coming program, The Upgrade, where she will be given the opportunity to share her inspiring story.”
Having been mentored by the Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) and operating from their Pilane multipurpose incubator, branch manager Lovvy Moriah-Otimile, who graced the event, emphasised community support for local businesses.
“Support from family, friends and the community within which one operates is crucial,” she said. Moriah-Otimile encouraged Thapelo to find a balance between business and social life.
“Running a business is a journey filled with hurdles, but it’s worth the effort,” she advised, further describing entrepreneurship as a journey of “knocking on doors,” where it’s often uncertain which ones will open.
Reflecting on the day, Thapelo appreciated the support she received. “I am so grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey,” she said. ENDS
