BR Highlanders secured a place in the last 16 of the Orange FA Cup tournament after a tense match against Chadibe FC at the Francistown Council Stadium on Saturday.
The match ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes, but BR Highlanders triumphed 6-5 in the penalty shootout, showcasing their resilience and determination.
Chadibe FC started strong, dominating ball possession and searching for an early goal. Both teams were alert defensively, minimising scoring opportunities. Despite Chadibe’s pressure, BR Highlanders held firm in the first half, effectively blocking their attempts to find the net. The first half concluded without any goals.
In the second half, BR Highlanders showed improvement and created chances of their own. However, both teams struggled to convert their opportunities to goals, with goalkeepers from both sides making crucial saves. In the 60th minute, Chadibe FC made strategic substitutions, bringing in Kudzani Sibanda, Malvern Moyo, and Clementine Mudzidzwa to boost their attacking efforts but still, that failed to break the deadlock.
BR Highlanders responded with their own substitutions, introducing Mmoloki Galetshetse and Atang Gaotshwanetse, which raised the game’s tempo.
However, neither team could find a goal before the final whistle, leaving the score at 0-0.
In a post-match interview, coach Wame Mokoke of BR Highlanders expressed contentment in his team’s performance, noting that they were viewed as underdogs against Chadibe FC , which compete in the elite league. He praised his players for successfully frustrating their opponents and executing their defensive strategy, which led to the penalty shootout victory.
Chadibe FC coach, Chris Mawanza reflected on a disappointing day for his team, acknowledging their solid defense but not happy with their inability to score.
He said focus was now on upcoming premier league matches. ENDS
