Dance group makes waves

The Choreographers-BW, a vibrant and youthful dance group, is making waves in Botswana by providing entertainment for a variety of occasions, including weddings, festivals, and corporate events.

With their impressive dance techniques, the group has quickly become a favourite among locals, showcasing their talents at different venues every week. Founded by Tefo Bome from Kanye, The Choreographers-BW was established with the vision of creating a platform for independent dancers to secure bookings without being tied to a specific artiste.

Recognising a unique opportunity, Bome identified a gap in the wedding industry, particularly in the roles of brides and grooms’ maids. He noted that the hectic schedules surrounding wedding preparations could be overwhelming for couples, especially when traditional customs and various responsibilities come into play.

Then Bome introduced the idea of offering professional bridesmaids and groomsmen services, known as Baetsana, to support couples on their special day. He shared that he had previously taught wedding dance moves, but he soon realised the disappointment many couples faced when their friends failed to fulfil their roles at the last minute.

“Initially, I focused on teaching wedding dance moves due to high demand, but I became aware of the last-minute disappointments couples experienced with their friends,” he explained.

He turned this challenge into a business opportunity, providing not only dance services but also a reliable support system for brides and grooms. Currently, The Choreographers-BW employs around 17 talented young energetic dancers, mostly tertiary students, who deliver captivating performances that continue to attract more bookings.

Bome shared that while their earnings may not be substantial, they were enough to support his employees and sustain the business. He emphasised the importance of maintaining competitive prices to appeal to clients in Botswana, where higher rates could deter potential customers.

Like any business, The Choreographers-BW faced its share of challenges such as the lack of a proper venue for practice, issues with costume changes, and logistical hurdles. However, he viewed these challenges as motivation to work harder toward their goal of owning a dedicated studio for rehearsals and improving their logistical capabilities.

With determination and resilience, Bome believed that there were no limits to what he and his team could achieve. He expressed deep gratitude to their supporters, citing that ever since this journey, the response from fellow Batswana had been overwhelming, as they managed to get bookings weekend in weekend out.

Bome said he believed in perseverance, commitment, and hard work, which were essential ingredients for success and also encouraged fellow youth to harness technology to create their own opportunities. ENDS
