Elegance dominates SONA

20 Nov 2024

The red carpet at the historic 13th Parliament set the scene for a modest yet refined fashion statement during President Advocate Duma Boko maiden State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA).

Attendees stepped away from the usual flamboyance associated with political events, opting for a palette dominated by muted colours, primarily blues, greys and blacks, reflecting a season of moderation.

In a departure from the public’s expectation of bold and daring attire, Members of Parliament, dignitaries, and guests made their way into the venue with an air of understated elegance.

Men’s fashion showcased a recurring trend of navy blues, greys, and blacks, complemented by simple shirts and ties.

Notable figures such as Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe, Minister of Environment and Tourism Wynter Mmolotsi, Speaker of the National Assembly Dithapelo Keorapetse, and Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi exemplified this subdued approach to style.

A highlight of the event was Minister of Health Dr Stephen Modise, who made his SONA debut in a navy pinstriped suit,  with a gentlemen’s hat alongside MP for Moshupa Karabo Gare, who embraced a similar classic aesthetic.

Meanwhile, former President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi added a subtle pop of colour with a blue, black, and white tie, while former Vice President Ponatshego Kedikilwe graced the carpet alongside his spouse in a traditional flared leteise dress.

Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs Lesego Chombo made a statement with her Nura Bloom original two-piece suit, sporting an intricately crafted jacket featuring a lace collar made from beaded net fabric. The pants, also made from beaded net, provided an elegant touch, merging structure with femininity for a standout look.

Assistant Minister in the Presidency Maipelo Mophuting embraced cultural influences with a Japan kimono-inspired long grey floral appliqué dress. Not to be overlooked, Dineo Saleshando captivated onlookers in her impeccably tailored pastel cream coat dress, while Katlego Keorapetse arrived with her spouse in a tasteful black and white straight-line dress featuring detailed puffy sleeves.

Among the attendees, Member of Parliament for Charleshill Motsamai Motsamai turned heads in a stylish suit topped off with his customary Panama hat and a modern Herero knobkerrie.

Completing this calm fashion narrative, President Duma Boko made a lasting impression in a relaxed three-piece suit in shades of blue, paired with a white shirt and a grey, black, and white striped tie. His trademark dark shades added a final touch to his subtle yet composed appearance. ENDS
