Keorapetse calls for recount
01 Nov 2024
Umbrella for Democratic Change candidate for Selebi Phikwe West Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse is demanding a recount after losing the constituency to Botswana Congress Party in the general elections.
Mr Keorapetse garnered 3018 votes against BCP's Mr Reuben Kaizer's 3054 votes whilst the BDP candidate Ms Beauty Manake trailed behind with 2196 votes.
Mr Keorapetse who was not present during the counting of ballots at the Town hall complained that his counting agents informed him of some irregularies that happened during counting of ballots which led him to lose the constituency to the BCP.
He claimed that some ballot papers that were considered spoilt were in fact valid adding that there was also the inconsistency in the recording of ballots during the counting and that could also have led to inaccurate tallying.
He also raised a point that the number of counted ballot papers did not tally with the actual number of people who had voted, highlighting that there was an excess of five ballots which could not be reconciled.
Though other candidates accepted the results, Mr Keorapetse did not accept the results.
A total of 10 664 people registered to vote in this constituency but only 8382 managed to cast their vote. Ends
