Marakakgoro receives Legendary Award

The late Gospel music legend Mmereki Marakakgoro, was posthumously honoured with the Legendary Award during the 5th Gospel Music Awards held at the Tlotlo Conference Centre on Saturday. Marakakgoro, who passed away April last year in a road accident, was recognised for his immense contribution to Botswana’s Gospel music scene.
He was one of the pioneers of the genre alongside his peer Bafana Phetho, also known as Phempheretlhe, who accepted the award on his behalf. Marakakgoro’s legacy lives on through his timeless hit, Eat Sum More, where he famously likened God’s love to a biscuit, something you can never stop enjoying once you start.
The Minister of Tourism and Environment Nnanikie Makwinja, expressed appreciation for the event, noting the importance of the creative industry in boosting Botswana’s economy. She highlighted government’s growing interest in religious tourism, stating that the sector had potential for significant growth.
Makwinja encouraged Gospel artistes to persevere, emphasising that their talent could not only enhance their own lives but also contributed to the country’s economy. One of the event directors, Prophet Joel Keitumele, reflected on the event’s theme: Psalms of Healing, and expressed hope that the music performed would bring healing to those in need.
He urged the nominees to continue honouring their craft, and expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their support.
Several artistes were recognised during the awards, which featured 19 categories. Shinkie Mochawacha took home the award for Best Gospel Song for Ke ene Jehova, while Thee Daniels won Best Group/Duo for their song Ebenezer.
Dondie had an impressive night, claiming two awards, including Best Gospel Packaged Album for Jehova Ke a Leboga and Best Newcomer for O ya Galalela.
The Best Traditional Gospel Evangelist award was won by Letso Mphela for Emelang Jeso, while Tumisang Seleke took home the award for Best International Gospel Artist for Tulo Ena. Ina Blossom’s Delightful was named Best Gospel Album of the Year, further cementing her position in the industry.
Boago Fenju also had a remarkable night, winning the Best Contemporary Album and Best Female Gospel Artist. Chokie was honoured with the Best Gospel Video for Tlhompha, while Earnest Seakgosing was named the Best Gospel Producer. Ounah Keitseope known for his consistency in producing quality Gospel music, received two awards, Best Male Gospel Artist and the Director Honorary Award.
Finally, the Best Legendary Award was presented to Mayoress Mochankana for her contribution to the genre. ENDS
