Renowned artiste, Maxy Khoisan’s song, Kgang tsa ga malome, continues to make waves on radio and social platforms.
Released in May, the single, which features Chambers Musiq, addresses critical social issues in the Setswana culture.
In an interview, Maxy Khoisan explained that the song highlights the phrase ‘setlogollo ntsha ditlhogo’, which has been linked to incest.
She explained that the phrase referred to an uncle demanding sexual favours from a niece as payment for having raised her.
The song includes phrases such as ‘Kgang tsa ga malome di tsosa bana ba phefo,’ meaning the uncle’s words are so disturbing they give one goose bumps.
Maxy Khoisan said that such issues still existed, and she wanted to use her music to caution uncles and other family members against demanding sexual favours from relatives.
The song speaks out against incest and rebukes family members who engage in such behaviour.
It addresses gender-based violence by fathers, uncles, brothers, sisters, and anyone who abuses those who cannot defend themselves.
She said music was a powerful tool therefore she believed that artistes like her could bring awareness and educate listeners about the issue making them aware of the signs and consequences of such violence.
Maxy Khoisan, AKA Mma Gauta, also said music has the power to influence people’s attitudes and beliefs. “Songs that speak out against sexual violence such as Kgang tsaga Malome can challenge cultural norms and stereotypes that perpertuate such violence,” she said.
Also victims can feel seen, understood and supported, therefore encouraging them to speak out about their experiences and seek help.
Also, she said, songs such as Kgang tsa malome could motivate listeners to take action whether by advocating for policy change and also by supporting local organisations working to end it or intervene when they witness abuse. Ends
