Expressions, an inaugural creative arts event by Apex Impact entertained the audience with a captivating fusion of Botswana traditional dance, Indian Classical Dance, and Marimba at Maitisong, in Gaborone recently.
In an interview with BOPA post the event, Expressions founder Ishani Loona said the event served as a catalyst for fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
Loona also expressed excitement about the success of the event saying it promoted cultural exchange between India and Botswana.
“Attendees loved the fusion of diverse art forms and how it expanded their perception of creative arts in Botswana,” she said.
Loona added that the collaboration between Mophato Dance Theatre and the School of Indian Dance and Music particularly stood out, with many acknowledging its transformative impact on the cultural landscape.
Shedding more light on the aim of the event, she said Expressions was the first event by Apex Impact, a Corporate Social Responsibility vehicle, with a vision to impact lives through positive influence.
“Through initiatives like mentorship, transformation, and globalisation, Apex Impact aims to empower individuals and enhance Botswana’s global presence in the creative sphere,” she added.
Loona also shed light on the unique collaborations that emerged during the planning process, highlighting that the partnership between Mophato Dance Theatre and the School of Indian Dance and Music was a pivotal moment.
“This partnership not only showcased the potential for innovation within traditional art forms but also laid the groundwork for future collaborations and performances,” she said.
She urged those interested in creating similar cross-cultural experiences, the importance of determination and commitment to one’s vision.
She encouraged aspiring organisers to embrace creativity and leverage the growing interest in the creative arts community.
With unwavering support and dedication, Loona believes that organisers could create unforgettable experiences that resonate with the audience and contribute to the flourishing creative landscape.
She said Expressions not showcased the richness of Botswana’s cultural heritage and also exemplified the power of collaboration and innovation in the creative arts.
She further said seeing the Indian natives speaking Setswana at the show and Botswana speaking Indian language was just beautiful.
She also noted that attendees believed that this was another form of growing the creative sector and teaching each other about how diverse culture could be.
Also from the attendees perspective, exchanging cultures helps people appreciate each other more because it fosters understanding, empathy, and respect.
“It allows individuals to see the world from different perspectives, learn about different traditions, values, and ways of life, ultimately breaking down stereotypes and building connections,” she said.
For example, she said Indians and Batswana sharing their cultural practices could lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage, fostering mutual respect and cooperation. ENDS
