Khawa is abuzz with activity as preparations for the annual Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival slated for May 3-5 kick into high gear.

In an interview, Rock Mphela, the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport, and Culture district coordinator for Tsabong and Hukuntsi, expressed  his excitement for what promises to be a spectacular festival filled with a variety of engaging activities.

The cultural night and contemporary music festival, will see  four polka groups, four Namastaap groups, and the Kwena Madiba Cultural Group from Molepolole, known for their expertise in phatisi and as national arts festival champions,  showcasing their talents.

These groups, Mphela said, were carefully chosen based on their outstanding performances in regional competitions. The polka groups were specifically selected for their achievements in the national arts festival, with the Khawa Primary School polka group playing a special role as hosts and providing a platform for young talent to shine.

A new addition this year is a fashion show category aimed at supporting local designers and the fashion industry, featuring models strutting their stuff during the cultural night.

He said in addition to the cultural performances, various sports activities will be taking place, with different sporting bodies overseeing competitions in horse racing, motorsport, football, and beach volleyball.

Among the highlights is the football tournament, featuring constituency champions including defending champions Khawa 11, Blue Bulls from Struizendam, Orlando Stars from Kgalagadi South, and Maake. The matches are set to begin on Friday, culminating in the crowning of the champion team on Saturday.

Mphela said Khawa residents were in for a treat as the Botswana Horse Racing Association boosts the excitement with nine thrilling horse races, with increased prizes for both the winning horses and jockeys. There's even a special 800-meter Tswana breed race exclusively for Khawa locals, aimed at empowering the community. Other races will include thoroughbred competitions ranging from 800 meters to 2 400 meters, as well as Tswana horse races covering distances of 800m, 1 000m, and 1 400m, with a total prize purse of P250 000 up for grabs.

Beyond the races, festival-goers can look forward to beach volleyball matches, a 4x4 vehicle challenge, quad and camel rides, as well as bike stunts and competitions featuring quad bikes and motorbikes organized in collaboration with Motorsport Botswana and the Botswana Tourism Organisation. Traditional stalls will also be present, showcasing the unique cultural heritage of the district. ends
