Artists have been advised to refrain from drug and substance use as it hinders their progress in executing their craft.

Speaking during the COSBOTS-BOMU mental health, anti-drug and substance abuse in the creative industry Campaign on Tuesday, Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS) Vice-Board Chairperson said artists were the custodians of cultural heritage and architects of narratives that have the power to redefine perceptions and instigate societal transformation.

 James Mayambo said taking care of their mental health would act as a big win for the country and the creative industry.

He also advised artists to use their voices and spread the word on the impact of substance abuse and the importance of mental health.

“I beseech each of you to place your physical and mental health at the forefront of your priorities. United in our resolve, let us confront the spectre of substance abuse head-on and cultivate an environment where resilience, healing, and creativity thrive”, he said.

Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) president Fresh Lesokwane stated that the sole reason for the campaign was to address the pressing issues affecting most artists across the country including mental health concerning drug and substance abuse. Drug and substance abuse, he said was a complex and multifaceted issue that impacts not only the individuals struggling with addiction but also their families and communities.

Lesokwane said COSBOTS-BOMU intends to use the campaign to disseminate information on the risks and consequences of substance abuse, emphasising the impact on artistic creativity and personal well-being.

For his part, Francistown Deputy Mayor, Lesego Kwambala said the entertainment industry was a field that could be incredibly demanding, placing significant pressures on the mental and emotional well-being of those involved often leading to drug and substance abuse.

 Kwambala further stated that the prevalent drugs and substance abuse challenged all to address the issue head-on.

“Drugs and substance abuse, together with other social ills have the potential to harm the wellbeing and functioning of our society”, he added.

Kwambala also acknowledged COSBOTS and BOMU alongside other stakeholders on a job well done in bringing about the campaign for the sake of the creative industry and urged them to intensify the campaigns. ENDS
