Children up for treat at Gatwe e rile

04 Apr 2024

In the past, after a fulfilling day of harvesting or enjoying fresh cow milk with pap or meat, parents and children would gather at home or in the fields to conclude the day with folklore stories by the fireplace.

These stories, called mainane in Setswana, served not only as entertainment but also as a means to educate children about their culture.

This Saturday, children will have the opportunity to experience these folklore stories titled, Gatwe e rile at the Thapong Virtual Arts Centre.

Founder of Esteres, Michelle Phetlhe said in an interview on Wednesday that the event was significant as it preserved culture through storytelling.

“Mainane not only imparted valuable lessons but also instilled in children an appreciation for their traditions and an understanding of decision-making,” she said.

Phetlhe expressed her personal connection to mainane, saying she had forgotten some of the stories and wished to reintroduce them not only to herself but also to her children and those who had not had the opportunity to experience this cultural gesture.

She said she believed that sharing such stories could foster a sense of unity and compassion within the society.

Exploring the benefits further, Phetlhe noted that mainane provided insights into different cultures, model character traits and inspired a love for storytelling.

“The event will feature interactive activities and presentations, including various Setswana games and board games by Raluhk Woods, morabaraba, and mhele,” she said.

Additionally, she said they had collaborated with Tefo Paya of Top Art and Setswana authors Dr Nankie Ramabu and Emmanuel Boefelo.

To ensure inclusivity, she said English translations would be provided by Thulaganyo Phetlhe.

She emphasised the importance of passing down such stories to future generations, especially in a world where individual success often took precedence over community’s well being.

“It is important to reintroduce mainane to families and communities, to educate them about the value of storytelling in nurturing empathy and unity among individuals,” she said.

She added that she believed that hosting the event during this time would allow children to immerse themselves in the storytelling experience around the warmth of a fire.

Phetlhe said she hoped to host similar events multiple times a year to continue promoting botho and cultural preservation. ENDS
