North West District councillors have showered the Shorobe-born Lesego Chombo with accolades for her dedication and exceptional achievement in winning the title of Miss World Africa at the just-ended Miss World pageant held in India.

They unanimously appreciated that Chombo had made them proud by ‘putting the district and the country on the map’ through her sterling performance she displayed at the prestigious pageantry.

The councillors aired their views when making submissions to the chairman’s speech indicating that for Chombo to have made it to the top four at the world stage of beauty, was a big achievement of the highest accolade befitting of the beauty and grace she displayed throughout the show.

Specially elected Councillor Motlagomang Mauchaza appreciated that Chombo had charmed everyone and thanked a delegation from Maun, which joined multitudes at the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport to welcome the queen home.

“It was pleasing to see the nation united in celebration of our very own daughter, Lesego’s victory.

That was an indication that her remarkable achievement brought pride to her home country,” she added.

Another specially elected Councillor Bareetsi Bogaisang noted that Chombo had made Ngamiland region proud as she had showed the world that she had what it takes to become a queen.

He acknowledged that Chombo was the not the first Motswana to attain the international fame at that level.

He wished they could honour her by organising a colourful event befitting a queen’s welcome when she visits to Maun.

Bogaisang also proposed that the council could consider coming up with fundraising activities to demonstrate love and support towards the reigning queen’s beauty with purpose project, The Genesis, which sought to nurture the potential of economically disadvantaged children by dismantling the barriers that hindered growth.

The project empowers parents with essential skills and fostering environments conducive to emotional, social and cognitive development.

He appreciated that it emphasised the need to raise children in a conducive environment so that they aim high in life.

Councillor Luke Motlaleselelo of Bojanala ward thanked Batswana for demonstrating immense support for Chombo all the way until the last day.

He wished government could recognise the talent and contribution of the district in areas of art, sports and beauty pageants and consider providing proper infrastructure that could help unearth, nurture and develop more talent.

In his speech earlier, Council Chairman Itumeleng Kelebetseng noted that Chombo had made them proud at the just-ended Miss World pageant and pointed out that the district was committed to assisting her during and after her reign to ensure that her goals were reached. Ends
