Renowned folklore artiste, Ntirelang Berman has paid tribute to the award-winning author of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency book, Alexander McCall Smith for giftng him a guitar and enrolling him in a music school, which paved way for him to become one of Botswana’s best folk stars.

Narrating the story on Friday in the author’s presence, during Gaborone Book Festival fundraising dinner where he also gave a splendid performance, he reminisced of visiting Maitisong 20 years ago to have his tattered guitar which often went out of tune to be fixed by David Slater, a well-known music teacher at Maru A Pula School.

He said seeing talent and desire in him to become a great musician one day during multiple visits, Slater introduced him to Smith, who gave him a new guitar and later arranged for him to attend music school.

Berman expressed gratitude, crediting the author’s support for propelling him to become a renowned folklore artiste in Botswana and gain international recognition and success in his music career.

He highlighted how such support opened doors for him to perform globally in countries such Germany, China, Japan, and Canada.

Berman reflected on the connection he felt with the author, particularly in his inclination to write music stories about women, a theme the author was known for.

“I used to wonder why I’m drawn to singing about women, but after listening to the author’s discussions about the book Mma Ramotswe, now it all makes sense,” he remarked.

The folklore artiste extended his gratitude to Slater.

Touched by Berman’s words, the author was visibly moved and approached Berman and embraced him warmly. Berman delivered a splendid performance at the event.

Starting his music career at a young age, the 43-year-old has been involved in the My African Dream talent search since its formative years.

A few years ago, Berman released a folklore album titled Maloba, which earned him the Best Folklore award at the second Botswana Music Union Awards.

He remains a dedicated traditionalist, aiming to revitalise traditional music and its associated culture. ENDS
