22 Feb 2024

Tashy’s Garden in Ramotswa prepares to host a vibrant showcase of Botswana’s diverse cultures, traditions, and customs during this year’s 19th Son of the Soil (SOTS) festival tomorrow.

This iconic cultural event has secured its place on the local and international entertainment calendars, serving as a testament to humanity’s rich tapestry.

SOTS has not only united people within Botswana but has also drawn individuals from across borders and languages.

It serves as a platform to honor heritage, express gratitude, and revel in the beauty of cultural diversity.

This year’s SOTS promises an even more captivating edition, featuring dazzling traditional attire, pulsating traditional songs and dances, and an array of delectable traditional cuisine.  The celebration of culture will unite patrons in joy and unity, offering an opportunity to immerse in traditional dances, games, and musical performances.

Adding to the festive lineup, South Africa’s Johnny Mokhali of Ba tlogeleng ba tle go nna fame will join the event, bringing a unique flair to the celebration.

Kabelo Semele of Bana ba Mmala Trust has expressed excitement about the resonance of Botswana’s music and dance with the masses, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

One of the highlights at SOTS is the lively dikhwaere competition between the North and the South of Botswana, a longstanding battle which adds to the festival’s charm.

Meanwhile, live music performances by renowned Botswana artists, including Ndingo Jowa, Sereetsi and the Natives, Maxi Khoisan, Matsieng, Dr Vom, A.T.I, and Mma Ausi, will further showcase the diversity and inclusiveness of the Son of the Soil festival.

Scheduled performances also include Skiit Kabomo, Ngwao Letshwao traditional troupe, Rangers Marena choir, Nono Siile, and Sebaga, among others.

Patrons of SOTS eagerly anticipate the authentic traditional brew, bojalwa jwa Setswana, enjoyed from the phafana, a traditional cup.

Additionally, fashion takes center stage with a parade where the best-dressed attendees are recognised, adding an extra layer of excitement to the festivities.

Pinkie Koma, a regular SOTS patron, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming event, looking forward to the music, cultural exchange, and stylish outfits. “I am expecting to dance to our all-time favorite dikhwaere music and traditional song and dance, the cultural exchange, and not forgetting the beautiful and stylish outfits,” Koma said excitedly. Tickets are priced at P250 and P950 for VIP, offering a comprehensive experience inclusive of a decorated marquee, lunch and braai, private parking and ablutions, SOTS phafana, and bojalwa jwa Setswana tasting.
