Dikhwaere as a form of entertainment especially during festive holidays contribute to preservation of Setswana culture.
Speaking during Dikhwaere celebrations at Semarule lands recently, MP for Molepolole South constituency Mr Kabo Morwaeng said the event reflected government commitment to supporting the arts.
Mr Morwaeng, also the Minister for State President said dikhwaere was not only a form of entertainment, but something through which people could earn an income.
Emphasising the need to coordinate and organise for choirs to celebrate in one place, the MP said they agreed that the 11 choirs should always meet at Semarule on December 27 for the annual festive celebrations as travelling to perform at Diaagane and Mmanoko was a challenge.
He cautioned against fighting or disturbing the peace during celebrations because people come to the celebrations to unwind and enjoy entertainment. He said the celebrations attracted supporters who in turn supported the local businesses.
He said it was important that everything was done orderly and in the spirit of Botho. He said seven choirs would be given P1 500 and the four elderly choirs would get P1 000 as participation fees.
One of the organisers Othusitse Nomorotwo said they were happy to bring choirs together.
He said he was happy that many choirs heeded the call to perform in one place.
A member of Senior Choir, Thusego Baoki said dikhwaere was part of a culture, which they cherished and wanted to preserve. He said choirs helped to build good character and discipline among the youth and take them away from things that could endanger or ruin their lives. Ends
