Performing artistes have been urged to play a role in the fight against the ills of drug abuse this festive season.
Speaking during the official opening of artistes training on drugs and substance abuse prevention, Minister of Defence and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi said the fight against the use of drugs called for dedication, collaboration and information sharing.
He highlighted that it was particularly in the festive season that young people were pressurised by friends and peers to indulge in behaviours and tendencies that might be regrettable, including use of drugs and substances.
“Talk about against drug abuse in at every forum that you gain access to, on social media and at your various shows across the length and breadth of this country. As you grace various partying and social gatherings with your beautiful music and dance, please underscore the importance of staying away from drugs and psychotropic substances,” Minister Mmusi said.
He challenged artists to shake off the myth that using drugs enhanced talent among performing artists.
Minister Mmusi stated that government was equally concerned by the proliferation and widespread use of illicit narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the streets and schools hence the establishment of Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as commitment to save the youthful population from illicit drugs and substance abuse.
This, he said was the beginning of targeted partnerships focusing on drug prevention, personal development, skills training and job readiness, which would essentially give the youth a sense of purpose.
Additionally, Mr Mmusi said it was disturbing that most of the people who use drugs were the youth, but drug trafficking was organised by adults who were expected to mentor and guide children and the youth.
“These irresponsible and reckless adults will stop at nothing in pursuit of ill-sponsored wealth. In doing so, they ruin the future, career and health of young people including endangering their safety and normality,” he said. ENDS
