01 Nov 2023

Popular traditional music sensation, Ditiro Leero, known for his unique blend of modern traditional music has said he intentionally decided to host his One Man show in his home village of Selokolela  over the weekend.

Leero said in an interview with BOPA that this was a way of demonstrating Selokolela residents’ invaluable skill and also his appreciation for them.

He said he was overwhelmed by the support Batswana have displayed throughout his music career for over a decade, which gives him strength to do more.

“Home is always the best, but I also want to extend my appreciation to my supporters who attended in large numbers from the rest of the country,” he said.

Leero, who has so far released more than five albums, with his latest album titled ‘Lesamutlha,’ noted that as part of growth in the music industry, his dream is to provide a mentorship platform for aspiring and upcoming artists as they mostly struggle to access those who can better equip them to be best at their particular craft.

“My vision is to create a platform where professionals from the different arts genres such as traditional music and dance, poetry and music instrumental professionals can engage with such people and groom them to become better in what they aspire to do,” he said.

The tradtitional muso said all that is needed is to create a linkage through facilitating workshops for them.

He said although government is doing more in terms of reviving the arts, participation should also be done through individuals’ dedication from the respective professionals by volunteering their services.

As a singer and composure and having worked with most of the artists, he said he is optimistic that the initiative will be successful.

Leero further appreciated all those who were selfless and instrumental in his growth, including Eric Ramco Records and Matsieng where he performed as the lead singer, adding that for his part, he has helped grow groups such as Mmaratwa, Tawana ya Koma, Tsankana and Kalahari, adding that this can be a chance for them to give back to the society.

He also worked with the late Gong Master as well as Dr Vom through his album titled ‘Thobane,’ and the other one ‘Tlhabano.’ He also worked with the multi-talented Charma Gal.

Kanye South legislature, Dr Lemogang Kwape said his aim is to lobby support for Leero to uplift the Setswana culture.

He added that although the muso went through a tough time in the past, the support from the large number of people who attended the event is testament that he is a changed man.

Dr Kwape said there is absolutely no doubt about Leero’s skill as he stood as one of the most talented musicians to have ever emerged from Botswana.

He likened the occasion to the album ‘Labour of love’ by the United Kingdom reggae and pop group, UB40, recorded in 1983, adding that Leero previously faced challenges but he never gave up. ENDS
