Botswana’s first polygamous reality show dubbed; The Sekati’s: The Untold Truths premiers Sunday
Businessman Sekati Kemmonye told BOPA in an interview that the show will be aired on YTV channel through local broadcaster DSTV to give viewers an insight into their lives.
He expressed optimism that by sharing their story, they could educate viewers through edutainment about the realities of polygamy, and dispel any misconceptions or stereotypes regarding the marriage.
“And for us to be able to deal with these misconceptions, we need to allow people to participate, air their views and we also need to allow wives to speak freely about their experience as they live it,” he said.
Sekati believes that African culture should be celebrated and embraced thus the show eyes to promote appreciation and understanding of the diverse culture.
“The biggest currency that we have as a nation and as Africans is our culture, polygamy is part of our culture, therefore it is very imperative that people begin to buy our culture,” he said.
Sekati who doubles film making and pastoring shared that culture is what can sustain Africans beyond natural resources.
In the show, he said, as a family they navigate the complexities of their shared relationship, with his sister wives, Kagiso: first wife, who is a nurse and Mpho: second wife who is an entrepreneur.
Sekati said they would demonstrate the strength and resilience required to make the marriage work.
“What I can promise Batswana is to get a whole perspective of our family from all of us, from me as husband, from my wives, from our friends and from our family members.”
The cast of the reality show, he said, comprises of a vibrant and diverse group, including him, sister’s wives, family, close friends, and children.
“The first season is visually an introduction of who we are as a family and how we got to be where we are right now, but in the second season we are now zooming into the dynamics of the family itself,” he said
Asked how the children felt about being exposed to tv at a young age, he said they have had meetings with them to prepare them.
About the production of the reality show, he said, it was a collaborative effort between his family and a group of talented young locals.
He said the team was exceptional, showcasing the incredible skills and ingenuity of young people.
“The production which is called RichBoi Films Studios is produced by my family together with local guys, fairly young people, it is quite interesting what the local players can do when given the opportunity,” he said.
He further explained that he took the risk by giving young people, mostly students an opportunity to do the production as a way of helping Batswana.
“As much as somebody is going to take a risk with us, an unproven product, we also have to take that risk with unproven young people,” said Sekati.
He said their engineering prowess and innovative ideas were truly captivating thus he strongly encouraged others to consider offering opportunities to budding enterprises, particularly those run by the youth, instead of exclusively relying on established companies.
On his polygamous marriage, he said he was now getting calls from people who want advice regarding polygamy.
“I have medical doctors, lawyers, high ranking military officers who seek advice and we have couples who we are currently counselling, including pastors,” he said. Ends
