In an effort to promote an effective and impactful reading culture in the society, a youthful author, also a motivational speaker, is planning to open a book store in Maun before the end of the year.
With the realisation that the passion of reading seems to be gradually dying with time, the author believes that the shop could cultivate the environment where reading would be championed, respected and valued.
The 27-year-old Katamelo Monnatsie revealed in an interview that his passion for reading, compelled him to open the shop which would solely sell books produced by locals with a hope that it would revive the culture of reading as Batswana would have a place to access the books in an effort to support and appreciate local authors’ work.
He said there was an alarming decline in the culture of reading, which he said posed a danger to the present and future generations.
He is optimistic that the initiative would foster the love of reading, motivate people to make it a lifelong habit and view reading as a significant and enjoyable activity.
“It is high time Batswana appreciate the benefits of reading. The importance of reading cannot go unnoticed as it strengthens brain activity and boost communication skills among others,” he added.
Monnatsie, author of a Take the Lead book and poetry anthology Food for Souls said books could be both an escape and an adventure as reading gave readers the opportunity to see things in a different way.
Through Food for Souls, he said he was trying to spread the gospel message through poetry adding that the book was written like a love letter to the soul.
The book is a collection of religiously intriguing love poems or works of love.
Through the book, he said he wanted people to have burning desire to love and serve God.
He said: “In short, I am trying to feed the soul by spreading the gospel through poetry and I am planning to also convert the poems into audios.”
Monnatsie, who is also a devoted Christian acknowledged that the Bible hold ancient words that could guide, protect, lead and comfort hence in his books, he quoted some verses.
Although, he was still not famous, he is slowly making a mark for himself for readers in Maun and other villages by marketing his products through social media.
His poetry book, he said was doing well in the market and believed that having a one stop shop where other authors display their works could motivate authors to do more.
He sells to individuals and even interested companies.
Monnatsie also mentioned that Botswana National Library Services had reviewed one of his books and assured him a great support.
His love for writing, he said began while at junior secondary school as he spent a lot of time reading literature books.
“I have lived my dream because during my spare time, I used to write short pieces full of humour but also touching on serious issues. I encourage other authors to soldier on even if they face obstacles along the way. Writing requires hardwork and patience as the aim is to share messages that will make an impact in the lives of the people,” he added.
Monnatsie urged other authors to come up with initiatives to enhance a reading culture which he said was vital to the overall development of a nation.ENDS
