The entertainment industry is mourning the death of Maun-based DJ Big Pun born Moreetsi Molelekeng who passed away at Nyangabwe Referral Hospital in Francistown, Friday.
In an interview on Saturday, Botswana Musician Union president Phemelo Lesokwane said they were saddened by the untimely death of DJ Big Pun.
He said the industry in general had lost a legend, an asset who was instrumental in developing the entertainment and music industry.
He said Dj Big Pun together with the late Tops Masole had contributed immensely to the growth of the music and entertainment industry particularly in the North West region by grooming and nurturing many artists to become superstars.
“We have lost a resourceful person who was very gifted and so full of life. It is really sad to lose such a great talent in our industry,” he added.
Lesokwane shared how Dj Big Pun was vocal about issues affecting the industry including the welfare of artists. He described him as a person with a big heart who never ceased to assist others to stage successful performances in Maun.
He had a close relationship with many industry players and was eager to assist them in ensuring they deliver their best on stage,” he said.
DJ Big Pun untimely death came just a day before the annual regional Arts Festival in Maun, an event he played a key role in by ensuring its success as he used to provide the necessary equipment for the event.
As such, the DJs and other creative industry partners at the event observed a moment of silence to honour him.
His close friend Dj Leon who worked with him said Dj Big Pun was asthmatic and had an attack last week Thursday afternoon. He was taken to Maun General Hospital for medical attention and was later referred to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where he was hospitalised. Since his condition did not improve he was flown to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital in Francistown where he was admitted in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but could not make it.
“His passing has become a sudden shock not only to North West region but to the entire music industry as he worked well with everyone in the community irrespective of their status. We have lost a great talent and asset,” he added.
Dj Leon appreciated that the late Dj Big Pun handled his career with love and great enthusiasm adding that he would be dearly missed by many. He also attested that Dj Big Pun supported the National art festival competitions as he has provided the equipment since its inception in 2018 to date. ENDS
