Arts crucial to UB transformation

Arts are a crucial component of the University of Botswana’s transformation agenda.
This was underscored by the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Doreen- Ramogola-Masire at the opening of a contemporary San art exhibition at UB on Thursday.
Ramogola-Masire said arts formed an important part of UB’s curriculum research imperative and transformation agenda to cement the university’s position as a centre of academic excellence.
She highlighted the central place of San art within UB’s Department of Archaeology.
“As a university, we recognise that galleries with archaeological and historical data are essential to the life of an institution such as ours to complement teaching and research,” she said.
“They also support efforts to preserve the collective memory and pride of the community.”
She noted that UB’s mandate to collect and preserve works of San art dates back to 1999.
She stated that the art collection showcased and celebrated the contribution of the San to the national and regional art and cultural landscape.
Among the artists whose works form part of the exhibition are Nxaedom Qhomatca and Cg’ose Ntcox’o. Ends
