Event aims to support education

Over 25 artists from Jwaneng are expected to perform at the J-Mecca Back 2 Skul event penciled for Jwaneng Town Council (JTC) Stadium this Saturday.
The event, a brainchild of Unit 4/Seole ward councillor, Tshepo Mathulwe, is a collaborative event intended to collect stationery and raise funds towards the education needs of Jwaneng schools.
“This initiative is motivated by the pledge that I made after last year’s candlelight session intended to motivate learners to perform well during the examinations. I have since decided to collaborate with local artists to make a contribution to the education sector in our town,” said Mathule in an interview.
He said each reveller was expected to bring exercise books and other items as a gate pass, while part of the gate takings would also be used to buy prizes for last year’s top performers across the schools.
“We do not often appreciate the collective effort by our schools hence the aim is to appreciate the schools’ performance while at the same time motivating them to do better,” he said.
Mathule said as a community leader and also chairperson of the JTC education committee, he was obligated to be exemplary and encourage the community to play a role in improving the country’s education sector.“Improving the education sector is not entirely up to the government, and I hope this initiative will encourage the community, especially parents, to realise that their contribution is equally important,” he said.
He noted that since the event strived to be inclusive, it would start off with a family fun day set up, where a renowned entrepreneur and motivational speaker would set the tone.
He said the guest, who was an alumni of one of the local primary schools, would also demonstrate the importance of the Adopt a School Initiative, as one way of supporting education.
However, he noted that for the evening festival, they discouraged revellers from roaming the township while clad in school uniform to avoid sending a wrong message to the learners.
“As much as the theme of the event is school uniform, we do not want to send the wrong message to our children hence we are appealing to our elderly patrons to enjoy responsibly and not send mixed signals to the younger ones, lest they take advantage.” ENDS
