Tribute to jazz giants Sunday

Gaborone’s ‘lifestyle redefined’ restaurant, Thuntsha, will on Sunday host an event in tribute to fallen African jazz giants Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi and Jonas Gwangwa.
The event, which will be celebrated annually, will bring together jazz lovers and fans to the three legends who died on the same month of January in 2018, 2019 and 2021 respectively.
The founder of Zen Promotions, Zenzele Hirschfeld said the event would not only celebrate the musical experience and excellence of the trio, but would also appreciate their contribution to the growth of Botswana music.
The promoter said they saw it appropriate to honour ‘Bra Hugh’, as he was the first person to build a music studio in Botswana, and also undertook tours to sing alongside local musicians including Socca Moruakgomo, Banjo Mosele and the late Rampholo Molefe.
“Jonas Gangwa has given us celebratory songs that embrace our Setswana culture and wildlife. His songs Natsumi and Kgomo tell a story” she said.
In addition, Zenzele said Mtukudzi serenaded his fans with music that he shared with Botswana’s Ndingo Johwa and the Congolese based guitarist Kapenta Katuta.
“The event will also feature talents from Nono Siile, Kearoma Rantao, amongst others,” she said. Ends
