The last of Gaborone International Music Concert (GIMC) afrotech series show that was held on Friday night, brought together local and South Africa DJs who performed to a relatively manageable crowd.
Casper the DJ, a young hip DJ popular among commercial house music lovers set the tone for the night, followed by Jam-N-I, a female DJ who boasts 14 years in the industry.
Although she identifies with deep house music, Jam-N-I told BOPA that she was comfortable with all genres.
“I play all genres because I have to work and get bookings,” stated Jam-N-I.
Tefo Foxx, a Motswana DJ based in Pretoria appreciated how patrons were receptive of afrotech music.
He said the genre was slowly finding its way into the hearts of revellers in Botswana.
“Most people do not understand it and we need to push it to that level where many will appreciate it more,” said Tefo Foxx, adding that the local scene needed more GIMC Afrotech-like events.
South African renowned DJ Cairo had good things to say about afrotech producers in Botswana.
“There is a lot of potential in the growth of Afrotech in Botswana. People have proved to love the music and appreciate it,” said Cairo, who also encouraged Batswana to support and hype their own.
Without disclosing much, Cairo said he worked with one local vocalist named Priscilla on the song Missing, from his latest album. “There is a lot that I will be doing with Botswana artistes because there is talent here and we need to tap on it and take it out to the world,” stated Cairo. ENDS
