Maiden meat festival lives up to expectations

The maiden Dinkgwana Meat Festival, hosted at Dinkgwana Chillas and Grill located in Mochudi on Independence Day, lived up to expectations as revellers were treated to the best food and entertainment.
It was a family affair for the patriotic Batswana who thronged the meat festival as they were treated to the best music and cuisine.
On the food side, there was more meat, a variety of it, which included seswaa and mokoto and it was more than enough that some even went home with leftover beef shin (masufu).
The entertainment, on one hand, featured activities for both the young and old while the children had their own playing ground and enjoyed quad bikes as well as horse riding.
Entertaining the crowd were only local DJs and musicians.
In an interview, Dinkgwana Chillas and Grill owner, Ms Joy Setshedi of Joy Foundation, said they were not expecting people to turn out in huge numbers, but was surprised by the large crowd that graced the meat festival.
Setshedi said the idea was to continue with the independence celebrations as people would have gone to the different kgotlas in the morning.
“This was the inaugural event and judging by the huge turnout, next year it would be bigger and much better,” she said.
Another idea, she said was to showcase the importance of cattle in traditional ceremonies including weddings and funerals.
The importance of cattle is shown in traditional proverbs such as ‘modimo o nko e metsi’ ‘ka e tlhoka ka tlhoka boroko, ka nna le yone ntse ka bo tlhoka’ among many others.
Kgatleng is not known as a beef hub and Ms Setshedi said they were hence marketing the area as such.
She appreciated sponsors which included White Star, Coca Cola and Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL). Revellers expressed their gratification, with one remarking, ‘ke jele ka mpa tse pedi’. Ends
