Music performers DJs thrill Maun

Judges at Maun  Contemporary music and DJ finals under the National Arts festival have hailed the competitions for impressive performances.

 The competititions which were held over the weekend provided a platform for artists to show their talent.

One of the judges, Trinity Mpho said they have observed tremendous growth from all the performing artists who displayed dedication from the preliminary stages up until the finals.

The award-winning jazz singer and songwriter who has been in the industry for over a decade noted that originality was key in the performing arts industry because consumers wanted to buy something that was unique and creative.

He, however, advised them to expand their craft by collaborating with other artists in the industry.

Acting deputy director of The Okavango Research Institute Professor Michael Hudson applauded the Ministry of Youth, Gender Sport and Culture for holding the Arts festival in different districts to boost the economy in the districts.

He encouraged performing artists to stay original and strive for quality, “This craft is your God-given talent utilise and live off it and package yourself in the most beautiful and attractive way.’’

After their thrilling performances, Maun’s own DJ Quan emerged as the finest in the DJ category.   DJ Fizzy won second place despite being the audience favourite and the only woman on the decks. She was followed by DJ The Guy in third position.

Lereko Lesole won the best newcomer live following his impressive act which saw him resonating the audience with a jazz melody and display of his guitar prowess. Letra Afrigate and Obonye Solomon won second and third positions respectively.

The best new comer backtrack went to Mamphorwana a Tladi, Xwala Dacash in second and Goareng Kelebogile in third position. The Francistown ensemble Kanvuthu stole the show and won best in the Live band category after  reverberating a Kalanga melody to the judges’ nods. Having moved the crowd with their sweet Afro Pop rhythm which had a jazzy feel Ramotswa-based Bongo Jazz band finished second while Maun-based Velast won third position.

The 2022 festival is held under the theme: Creative Industries, a Vehicle for Sustainable Development. Ends
