Africans celebrate traditions

Africans in Botswana had a taste of what their fellow Africans offer during Africa Day celebrations held Travel Lodge in Gaborone on Wednesday.
Botswana joined continent to celebrate this year’s edition themed: Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent. Africa Day is an annual event commemorating the day the Organisation of African Unity was founded.
Organised by African Diplomats, the Gaborone event featured stalls showcasing African cuisine and attire; from various countries such as Angola, Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique, Libya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Although Botswana did not have a stall, Mafitlhakgosi Traditional dance troupe represented the country mesmerising the dignitaries with their detailed choreographed Setswana dance.
Zimbabweans also entertained with rendition of the late Oliver Mtukudzi’s songs. Nigeria did not disappoint as they danced to Tekno and Kizz Daniel’s latest offering Buga which is the latest popular challenge on TikTok.
South Africa stamped their authority with Master KG’s smash hit Jerusalem, a song that hit over 100 million views on YouTube and went viral the world over.
Various countries’ delicacies ranging from staple foods, desserts as well as beverages were on offer during the day.
Libya’s throat dessert was enjoyably served with their warm tea, which the event’s patrons appreciated.
Also of interest, was Zimbabwe’s sweet dessert made from dry mealies and sweet melon.
South African offerings included the popular kota or sphatlho, a hollowed quarter bread loaf filled with different treats such as chips, polony, atchar among others foodstuffs.
Zimbabwe also served mophane worms also a delicacy in Botswana.
Nigeria also marked their presence with their famous jollof rice and chicken, ogi, yam, whilst Mozambique treated guests to some various sea food cuisine. Other countries such as Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique showcased their alcoholic beverages.
Angola’s Cuca laager was a hit among the guests, followed by South Africa’s elegant Nederburg Cabernet Sauvignon red wines and 56Hundred Sauvignon Blanc, whilst Namibia served Windhoek Lager.
The event was also made colourful by the fashion show from countries that exhibited. ends
