Botswana born Dj, producer and entrepreneur based in South Africa, Thato Sikwane aka Dj Fresh has challenged those who want to venture into the creative sector to be intentional about their dreams and goals.

Sharing his journey with the audience during the 30th anniversary celebrations of RB2, on Saturday, Dj Fresh, who started his radio career when entertainment was still looked down upon, said he had always been intentional about his dreams.

“If you believe in it enough, you want it enough and you work in the direction of that dream, there is no reason it cannot happen,” he said.

Not realising that he was crafting his career path, he said from a very young age, he could select and play his own choice of music at school activities, sometimes even playing music to his fellow classmates who took him lightly.

“I am where am supposed to be and everything I did from a young age was in the direction of my dreams,” said Dj Fresh.

He said when he heard the news about the new radio station being RB2, he did not hesitate and took his chance by approaching the station manabement.

Under the guidance of Dj Syd, he went through the process of auditioning and submitting demos. The rest is history.

Dj Fresh said RB2 provided him with a foundation that opened opportunities for most, if not all broadcasters who started with the station.

Working for a pioneer commercial radio station, Dj Fresh said they learnt everything on the go because they were not experienced with commercial radio stations at the time.

He challenged government to support the arts industry, emphasising that it was only when government was behind the entertainment space that parents could also realise the importance of nurturing young people’s dreams in the art space.

He said the support would give young people the platform to shine and fly high.

Dj Fresh further said government should be able to export Botswana’s popular culture.

Dj Fresh has worked with reputable radio stations such as 5FM, 94.7, Metro FM and YFM in South Africa. ENDS
