Warona Tito, who goes by the stage name Kunkuru Wee, is a good example that breaks the myth that poetry is an old folks’ turf.
The 11-year-old’s melodious sounds of poetry rhythms is a sure fire way of making one appreciate the beauty of Setswana poems.
The talented Kunkuru Wee lives the phrase ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ as through his little voice, he managed to find his own way to master Setswana idioms and arrange them well to make captivating poems, that talk about everyday life challenges.
His performance dress, made up of a leather head gear and trousers and a cow horn he uses to point out anything he wishes to during his performance, augurs well for him in the industry.
The young poet stated in an interview on Monday, that he realised his passion for poetry at the age of five; drawing inspiration from his parents. He said his mother Lesego Tito and his father, Kopang Tito were seasoned poets, who had been featured in a number of local poetry groups.
He said his short video clip encouraging people to comply with COVID-19 protocols, dominated social media platforms and found its way to Radio Botswana, also helped to unleash his talent.
“The support I receive from my parents has groomed and nurtured my talent well for me to remain relevant,” he said, adding that his mother did the ululations, during performances.
Kunkuru Wee said besides sensitising people about different social matters, poetry could showcase culture and also help people to express themselves.
He said he was positive that his poems would help draw people back Setswana poetry.
The young poet promised to leave no stone unturned in efforts to penetrate the entertainment industry with his self-titled Kunkuru Wee.
The album was arranged and produced at Touch Studios in Gaborone by Victor Kgaswane.
One of his poems, Corona Sekgopi, encourages people to continue adhering to the COVID-19 safety measures and not to feel defeated, while Tshere Banna, sensitises people about Gender Based Violence and encourages them to always seek positive ways to resolve challenges. ENDS
