27 Dec 2021

Solomon Mdura of Grootleges Stable from Gantsi was crowned the champion of Sefhophe Horsie Challenge, walking away with P25 000.

Mdura, who was riding a thorough breed named I do, took position one in heat two to qualify for the final, battling it out with seven other horses including TT Jet, which took position one at Motokwe Horse challenge on December 19.

Grootleges Stable jockey, Solomon Mdura was thrilled to have won the race after so many days of intensive training.

He said horse riding was a way of earning income to sustain himself and his family, hence he always competed.

The owner, Pasela Mothibi said, in an interview, that the win did not come as a surprise because his horse was one of the fastest he had ever kept.

He said his dream was to see his horse competing at national and international races.

The race, which was held in Sefhophe for the first time, attracted horses from as far as Takatokwane, Motokwe, Good Hope and Kokotsha.

The second runner up, Jay Again from Good Hope walked away with P15 000 while TT Jet and Lady Jet scooped positions three and four respectively.

Under the Tswana Breed category, horses from Kokotsha dominated the race with Mainstay and Humble scooping positions one and two respectively.

Mainstay, which was ridden by 21-year-old Morris De Jee also scooped prizes at Takatokwane and Motokwe horse challenges.

Riding a horse, he said was his everyday life and was looking forward to the Mascom national derby billed for Maun next year.

Under the 40km category, William Titus of Gaby Stable from Takatokwane scooped position one.

The organiser of Sefhophe Horsie challenge, Wiseman Benben thanked all those who made the event a success, particularly horse riders, who forewent spending the Christmas day with families.

He said horse racing was an interesting sport and that it took patience, skill and intensive training to win the competitions.

He encouraged all those who owned horses to take care of their horses, feed them well and immunise them.

He promised a bigger and better challenge next year, calling for Sefhophe community and the private sector to sponsor the challenge.

He also expressed his happiness about the turn up, adding that residents of Sefhophe and surrounding  villages yearned for entertainment during the festive season. ENDS
