Midas serves God through poetry

Tlamelo Office alias Midas is on a mission to make strides in poetry circles through her contemporary gospel poems.
In an interview, 21-year-old Midas said she wanted to add value and serve the Kingdom of God through arts.
Midas said she derived her poems from Bible teachings and she intended to spread the gospel through entertainment dimensions to break the stereotype that gospel was only suitable in a church set up.
“Poetry is an integral part of our everyday lives that gives information and entertainment. Most poems are traditional and speak about heroism, politics, and other everyday life situations. However, there is a gap on poems recited from the gospel,” she said.
The University of Botswana student said she felt the need to close the gap, saying it was another opportunity to spiritually empower the world outside Christianity.
Midas also said her poems sought to inspire and instil a sense of hope among people faced with everyday life challenges.
Meanwhile, Midas said she fell in love with poetry at the age of nine while at primary school.
She pointed out that her stage name was derived from the words of midas touch story, which referred to someone who touched things and they turned to gold.
She said the name gave her hope that she would make it in the entertainment industry even though it was already saturated.
Midas said she had performed on several corporate events and had also taken part in some competitions.
She said although she was a part-time poet, she did not despise it because it enabled her to strengthen her financial arm.
Midas said she had not received any formal teaching in poetry; however, she managed to nurture her God-given talent through research and observing seasoned poets.
“This built up my career as a poet. I learnt aspects of stage presentation and posture, how to engage the audience as well as creative ways to arrange poetic idioms and metaphors,” she said.
She said she also drew inspiration from international poets such as Jack Hill Perry while locally she looked up to TJ Dema.
Midas has been featured in an anthology of poems titled Gifted Hands where she contributed four poems alongside other writers.
She said to elevate her career to a higher level, she was set to release a debut album that would infuse music and poetry.
Midas said before the COVID-19 pandemic, she used to perform at the Diamond square at Main Mall in a live session show named the Diamond Hurdle jam session to keep enhancing her poetic skills. Ends
