The India Botswana Chamber of Commerce and Industry donated P500 000 towards food hampers that will be allotted among Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) registered members.
Speaking at the donation ceremony on Tuesday, representative from the Indian Community, Guarang Dalia said the creative industry more especially the performing arts fraternity, had been severely affected by the COVID 19 pandemic, due to absence of events or music shows.
“And as the two organisations, we initiated this project to support artistes and performers with hampers containing basic essentials. It is my belief that performing arts are an integral part of our community,” he said.
He said creative industry did not only help them understand the society and culture, but also contributed significantly towards the wellbeing of any society.
Dalia said it was of outmost importance that artists were supported in all ways possible to enable them pursue their arts during the testing times. He further said the project aimed to help about 275 artistes with food hampers valued at P600 each, during the months of December, January and February.
“We all hope and pray that these difficult times end soon and that we get to enjoy performances by our extremely talented artistes in the near future.”
Still at the event, KGK Diamonds also pledged to recruit 10 artistes to the diamond cutting and polishing industry.
Receiving the food hampers BOMU president, Phemelo ‘Fresh’ Lesokwane expressed gratitude to all those that extended support to the cause as well as those who would follow suit.
He thanked the India Botswana Chamber of Commerce for the donation adding that their generosity would contribute significantly towards artistes , who were ard hit by the pandemic.
“We are at war with an invisible enemy and the only thing left to do is help each other where possible,” Lesokwane said. ENDS
