Mechidi revisits crotcheting skill

03 Aug 2020

A mention of the word crotcheting or knitting can take you down the memory lane to a time when your grandmother or aunt made a tablecloth, a beanie or woollen sweater.

Watching 39-year-old Tshwarelo Mechidi crotchet, the memories come rushing back.

Mechidi has revisited her old crocheting skill, which she acquired during her school days at Tlogatloga junior.

She said after sitting on her crocheting skills for quite some time, in 2017 she decided to re-visit her hobby and turn it into something that could benefit her money-wise.

Her crotchet product line ranges from capes, jerseys, baby dresses, sloshy hats, beanies, scarfs, shawls, bags, slippers, bedspreads, face masks, and mats.

Mechidi explained that she perfected her skills online through YouTube crochet lessons to be at par with the latest trends.

Since she is employed fulltime as a youth programmes officer in Letlhakane, she does crocheting on a part-time basis.

She said she learnt to be creative by incorporating, among others, bikinis, cushion covers, chair covers, cardigans, light tops and earrings to cater for all her customers, most of whom were in Gaborone.

She said she had not yet registered her business and she operated from home.

Mechidi, who is driven by passion, said the intention was to expand the business and train a few people to work with. Ends
