Culture ministry fills Presidents Day holidays gap

The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development (MYSC) lined up a few activities over the holidays to compensate for the cancelled 2020 President’s Day competitions.
The competitions that usually characterised these holidays, were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following government’s decision to lift ban on some competitions, MYSC organised a recoding of few of the activities without audience.
The activities were held under strict COVID-19 health protocols, where few of the winners and runners up of the 2019 President’s Day Competitions were invited.
In an interview, MYSC public relations officer, Thobo Tlhasana, said the ministry took a decision to celebrate the President’s Holidays with previous year’s winners and also invited seasoned artists.
Tlhasana noted that they selected the talent across the country.
In addition, Tlhasana noted that the aim was also to showcase talent and encourage artists during this trying times.
He said the selected artists for this year’s activities would be compensated, emphasizing that his ministry was following terms and conditions of President’s Day.
Furthermore, Tlhasana noted that the ministry relief fund would cushion artists through provision of wage subsidy.
One of the selected guitarists, Mosalagae Kuchelele, urged fellow artists to invest in their craft and focus more on their production.
He said he started music in 1977, and therefore cautioned young artists to live responsibly as well as make wise responsible decisions in their music career.
President’s Day competitions are held every year at different regions and constituencies, where eliminations are made prior to final competitions in Gaborone. Ends
