Duo pledge to take arts to greater heights

10 Jun 2020

Kanye based Kemodisa Moilwa and Kegomoditswe Mophakedi say the arts have the potential to change the economic landscape of the country.

The duo said it was thus imperative to acknowledge the societal value of arts and culture, adding that culture and creativity have been the cement that binds together societies and nations.

They said they intend to demonstrate the value of arts and culture that provides a good rationale for government support, especially in developing countries where there were so many other demands on the public purse.

They said the world was beginning to focus on the cultural and creative industries because they had the potential to contribute to economic growth and job creation.

The duo said public and private sponsorship and support of the arts was important for producers whose main focus was intrinsic value.

While recognising and supporting the important role that the cultural and creative industries played in the economy, the duo argued that they should not lose sight of the unique intrinsic value that they generated.

This includes the reflection and shaping of national and individual identities.

They also said they painted and drew as well as making houses using pallets, adding that they also produced electricity using cow dung for heating and lighting.

The duo said cattle manure could be used as fertiliser or as fuel when dried and caked.

The duo, who are mentored by Taolo Moshaga, a well-known advocate for artists’ rights, presented him with an appreciation award. Ends
