Regarded as one of the best painters of his time and probably the best to ever come out of Botswana, Wilson Ngoni is currently hosting an art exhibition at Thapong Visual Arts Centre entitled, When a big star shines set to go on until March 27.
Officially opening the exhibition recently, Thapong Visual Arts Centre coordinator, Reginald Bakwena said it showcased Ngoni’s great skill and portrayed his use of art medium in the social construction of reality.
Bakwena urged other artists to take their cue from Ngoni and show the same innovation and commitment in their work.
“I want to plead with other artists to be innovative, professional and strive to be at the same level if not better than what we are seeing here today,” he said.
Bakwena further said the young upcoming generation of artist should draw inspiration from established artists whose work was already in the market so that their art could also penetrate local and international markets.
The coordinator complained of lack of conceptualisation in artists work.
He stressed the importance of building a clientele as well as networking noting that artists did not create artworks for themselves but needed other people to engage with their work.
For his part, Ngoni said his desire was to contribute something to the world and Botswana and could only do so through his paintings.
He expressed gratitude to his followers for attending and encouraged them to enjoy the paintings as they connected with the art.
Meanwhile, another artist, Victory Sethibe, also exhibited her work, which was mainly wood based. Ends
