Fashion students address waste problem

Fashion fanatics were on November 28 treated to a fashion show with a difference, courtesy of the Gaborone Technical College (GTC) Fashion Show at the school campus.
In a bid to lobby for the adoption of an environmentall friendly approach to reduce, re-use and recycle waste materials, models walked the ramp, draped in recycled bottles, plastic bags and newspapers instead of the usual silk, cotton and fur.
An official from the Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control, Tshenolo Sechele said Gaborone Technical College continued to teach and instill the quest to use natural resources in a frugal manner to the nation’s benefit as well as ensure conservation of resources for future generations.
“Our economy runs on natural resources, thus it is important to balance the environment and economic performance of our country. It is very vital for us to recognise that the environment is for us all,” she said.
Sechele encouraged GTC students to keep up the good work and make Botswana a clean country.
“The world is talking about climate change and there is a great concern on the issue. This Fashion show will have a positive impact because it reduces waste in the environment,” stated Sechele.
For her part, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology representative, Mosetsana Maripe said the show signified efforts towards the call on sustainable development and technical and vocational education and training skills for green economies.
“What we have witnessed from the students is a combination of the right skills, knowledge and attitude, all wrapped up in one. These are the competence needed for venturing into the world of employment and even becoming entrepreneurial enough to establish your own businesses,” she said.
Fashion without Borders partner, Serge Kabisoso hailed the students for showcasing their talent through designing using waste material.
“There is a lot of untapped talent that needs nurturing, which will ultimately contribute towards a strong pool of talent from Botswana to compete on international platforms,” he said. ENDS
