Picnic chillers dominate independence celebrations

Event organisers across the country continue to adopt picnic excursions as a way of luring revellers to their events. The objective is to provide entertainment in a more relaxed atmosphere, which can also accommodate children.
In Kanye, the organiser of Kanye Picnic Chillas, Bernard Tshuba said this year they have decided to offer a family outing during the independence holidays.
Scheduled for September 28 at Hampton Inn Gardens, the event is expected to augment the usual kgotla celebrations which are held in all villages across the country.
“As Botswana celebrates 53 years of independence, we have decided to come up with a picnic event with an African traditional affair theme.
We have realised that ever year the celebrations take place at the kgotla, and mostly it is only the adults who attend.
We therefore want to use this event to promote culture while at the same time providing alternative entertainment for everybody,” he said in an interview.
Tshuba said emphasis would be on the various traditional attires as outlined by the theme, hence a prize for the best dressed.
He said the event was also aimed at empowering local businesses, especially designers, who would be given an opportunity to showcase their skills through their customers’ designs.
He said they would also engage people for other services such as security, tents and cleaning, while stalls would also be available for sale.
Tshuba noted that entertainment would be provided by local DJs like Crespo, Zosky, Khenzo and Phouboy, with a few Gaborone DJs gracing the event.
“We urge people of Kanye and surrounding areas to come in large numbers to celebrate the African culture in a stylish and memorable occasion,” he said.
In Jwaneng, a group of young entrepreneurs are organising the first ever Jwaneng Spring Chillers for September 29 at Debswana Club Gardens to ignite the independence celebrations.
“The event will be all about socialising with friends and family.
We want to give revellers an experience of a chilled outing with exciting music, food and drinks as part of the entertainment,” said one of the organisers, Emmanuel Beregane.
The Jwaneng community is expected to be treated to a variety of music by DJs such as Newman, Naz Owski and Da Coloi, among others, On the other hand children’s entertainment will be in the form of jumping castles and face painting.
Beregane said the event would also go a long way in promoting economic empowerment within the mining town, as they would have stalls for various items like food.
He said the intention was to give priority to locals, especially the youth. ENDS
