Bakang ‘Baxon’ Moitoi, a Rasesa-based upcoming musician from Mochudi, has released a single.
Baxon, who has been in the music industry for two years, has released Le2000.
The song was inspired by the attention that the youth are receiving on the social media as well as the society at large.
Due to this attention, the creative musician decided to dedicate a song to them and it immediately became a hit. He is currently working on his first album.
When quizzed about his journey on music, Baxton admits that he developed a passion for motswako since 2014, and it is his genre of choice.
He added that, at the time, motswako had a great impact on the majority of people including him, hence him choosing this genre as he was a better rapper than singer.
He entered competitions around 2014 but was not good enough.
However, he never gave up. By the year 2017, he finally made a breakthrough by dropping a cover song titled Panda, which received much love from his Facebook fans.
This motivated him to drop a single titled Tima lebone on that very same year; while on the other hand; doing freelance photo journalism for the Department of Information Services.
He also made a song with ATI and Noello titled Ere lere; a song, which is doing well at the moment. Apart from music, Moitoi is also a forth year student, studying Television and Film.
“Film has always been my passion also,” he said, he continued to say that his education was his back up plan. He urged the youth to ensure that they also had a back up plan and not focus on one thing.
“You need something to fall back on,” he said.
He mentioned that his work could be found in social media. Like any other career path, Moitoi’s career path has some hiccups that he comes across every now and then.
Some of those hiccups can be promoters who can be a bit difficult when it comes to dealing with the newbies. He also complained about piracy.
He explained that locals tend to pop out cash when it comes to foreign music but prefer not to do so for local musicians.
“I think the locals are discouraged by the fact that there are very few outlets that sell local music in Botswana therefore they turn to downloading and sharing our music,” he said.
On top of that, he mentioned that government did not give enough support to the entertainment industry.
When asked about the solutions to his setbacks, he admit that there were some ways that they use to address their issues.
He mentioned that social media helps them a lot when it comes to selling their music.
“We sometimes advertise our music via Facebook,” he said.
Also, he said they make use of some pop up markets to sell their music.
He said these methods could be advantageous because they give them the opportunity to interact with their fans.
By so doing, he said they were able to reach out to those who do not use technology hence reaching out to a much larger audience as well as inaccessible audience.
He further said they also need media coverage on newspapers and magazines so as to reach more audience who did not reside in towns and cities and who do not have access to the Internet.
Moitoi admitted that he was doing well so far, both in his studies as well as music wise.
He also appreciated his fans for the love and support.
“Finally, I would like to encourage the youth to follow their passion because, if u do something that you love whole heartedly, you won’t give up easily. Also, be patient with what you do as there are challenges that you might come across. And I’ll also like to encourage parents to support their kids,” he said. ENDS
